People who suffer with excessive sweating may find that this condition (medically known as hyperhidrosis) will cause both discomfort and embarrassment.
Excessive sweating can affect both men and women, and is most commonly associated with the armpits, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Whilst at its worst in summer and warmer weather as the body uses sweat to control its internal temperature and stop you from overheating, excessive sweating is apparent all year round – even through the winter months.
Excessive sweating most often begins to occur during adolescence when hormone levels change frequently. Whilst for many people this condition is commonly idiopathic, it can also indicate an underlying medical condition. For example: anxiety, overactive thyroid glands, polycystic ovaries or overactive sweat glands.
Hyperhidrosis can cause extreme embarrassment for those who suffer this condition because they will often find it impacts social interactivity due to the obvious visual signs. Normal greetings like shaking hands is often avoided because the hands can feel tacky and damp, or in extreme circumstances, wet.
People with hyperhidrosis will likely also experience damp patches under their arms. This leads to a wardrobe full of black clothes in a bid to conceal the condition where antiperspirants have failed to be effective. There are a number of medical strength antiperspirants available which work to temporarily block the sweat glands. These are generally applied at night and will be part of an ongoing routine to maintain their effectiveness. Diet can also be addressed to assist in the fight against excessive sweating by reducing the intake of stimulants such as caffeine.
Where these attempts to self manage the effects of excessive sweating are insufficient, the team at Paradise Aesthetic Clinic are able to intervene. By using small doses of Botulinum Toxin injected directly into the area of concern, this can paralyse the sweat glands and halt the production of sweat, thus diminishing the symptoms of excessive sweating entirely.
