Marionette lines are the lines that run from the outer corners of the mouth down to the chin and occur with natural aging, they create sagging in the lower half of your face.
They earned their name from the marionette string puppet which has splits in exactly this area to allow the puppeteer to operate the mouth of the puppet and make it appear as though it is talking without the rest of the face moving.
Aside from the visual appearance of deep set lines in this area, one of the distinctive features of the development of marionette lines is that they make the face appear as though it is droopy. With this comes the effect of a sad looking face, which will often not reflect how the person feels on the inside.
Genetics is a factor in whether we can expect to develop marionette lines, as it can be a hereditary feature as we age. Outside of genetics being the cause, there are several other factors to why they may develop.
Over the course of our lifetime, gravity will play the largest part in the development of marionette lines stretching our skin both downward and inward. As this occurs, the pulling motion can cause the skin to droop toward the chin, and tension lines will appear from the weight of the skin is pulled downward. This is aggravated by the loss of collagen and elastin as they begin to deplete over time, and we start to lose the tightness and volume of the skin. When the skin loses its elasticity, further sagging can also occur deepening the appearance of marionette lines.
Our lifestyle choices will also have an impact on the condition of the structure of the skin. In order to delay or mitigate the development of marionette lines, we should be conscious to maintain regular exercise, good nutrition, and sufficient hydration to help preserve skin quality. In contrast, we should also avoid smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and exposure to the sun should be limited.
