Open large pores are often a hereditary feature and tend to occur when we are younger disappearing over time. This can reappear when we age as our skin begins to become lax causing the pores to appear more open. Factors that may lead to enlarged pores include increased sebum production, hair follicle size, use of comedogenic products, loss of skin elasticity with age, and sun damage.
When pores are open and large, this may increase the chance of developing further skin complaints such as blackheads or acne. This is because they can become congested and blocked which leads to infection. It is important to maintain a great skin cleansing regime if you are affected by large, open pores. This is because excessive production of sebum for an extended period can cause the pores to stretch and when oil, dirt, toxins, and makeup get trapped within the pores, this can weigh them down making them appear much bigger than they are in their natural state.
When large open pores develop as a result of aging, this is because the collagen levels in our skin have begun to deplete. This collagen is responsible for keeping our skin hydrated, plump, and tight and so when our collagen production begins to deteriorate, the skin that supports the pores loses its elasticity and the pores appear more open.
We know that exposure to UV rays weakens the collagen in our skin, and so avoiding long-term exposure to the sun is a great way to defer the appearance of large or open pores and preserve the skin’s resilience.
In women, our pores may increase in size due to the menstrual cycle or pregnancy. This is because the pores in our skin are dynamic, and therefore the sudden spike in hormone levels (usually around the time of ovulation when considering the menstrual cycle, or throughout pregnancy in particular in the first trimester) will cause them to react and open. When hormone fluxes are the cause, the pores will retract to their more usual size.
Keeping the skin clean, well-hydrated, and sufficiently exfoliated will be the best way to tackle open or large pores. Our skin experts at Paradise Aesthetic Clinic will be able to recommend the appropriate treatment plan for you.
