Stretch marks on the skin appear due to the stretching or retracting of the skin most often due to weight loss and gain, or through puberty as the body shape will begin to change and the skin stretches to accommodate this.
Stretch marks may present themselves as streaks that are red, purple or silver in colour and are usually found in clusters where weight or shape change has occurred. They are completely harmless from a medical perspective, however can cause embarrassment or self consciousness for those who are affected.
More prevalent on the buttocks, breasts, thighs, stomach and hips, they will often start off darker and fade to more of a silvery tone over time as the surface of the damaged skin heals.
When the skin rapidly stretches or retracts, this can cause the very surface of the skin structure to tear and reveal lower layers of the skin along with revealing blood vessels hence the darker tone on development. The use of some steroids such as creams and tablets can negatively impact the strength and integrity of the skin’s structure and so can be a contributing factor to the development of stretch marks.
There are many creams and lotions available on the market which promise to improve the appearance of stretch marks, but sadly these are largely ineffective and will likely have little or no effect and will almost certainly not eradicate the issue in its entirety.
At Paradise Aesthetic Clinic, our team of specialist skin experts are able to look more closely at the skin structure to successfully diagnose the cause of your stretch marks, ascertain the level of damage that has occurred and recommend a treatment that will help to restore the healthy properties of the skin and encourage surface repair so that stretch marks may be eliminated or certainly less prominent.
