IPL Photofacial

The IPL photofacial uses Intense Pulsed Light to treat common conditions, such as: lines and wrinkles, unwanted hair, age spots and melasma – the butterfly shaped pigment patches that often appear around the mouth during pregnancy.

IPL Photofacial

Treatment overview

This procedure scatters wavelengths across the treatment area, penetrating into the second layer of the skin without damaging the outer layer.

Conditions like wrinkles and pigmentation are ageing-related concerns that develop from a weakening skin structure and the damage that the sun’s UV rays can lead to. These visible characteristics can become unwanted features that affect a radiant and youthful look.

The IPL photofacial procedure aims to deliver thermal energy to the middle layers of the skin. This is achieved through pulses of light that are attracted to the pigment in the skin, which shatters into fragments that the body can easily clear away.

The light converts to heat when absorbed by the natural pigment to effectively reduce the appearance of age spots or freckles by destroying any unwanted pigment. In the same way, thermal energy helps to get rid of unwanted hair by destroying the follicle, preventing hair regrowth.

This treatment will be performed on the recommendation of your healthcare professional, according to the results of a full assessment, conducted at a pre-treatment consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Laser treatment delivers one wavelength of light, to deliver controlled energy and a focussed approach to the treatment area. IPL differs by scattering a variety of wavelengths to address a wider area. As the laser is attracted to the brown colouring of melanin, it works best on lighter skin tones. When used on darker skin tones, areas of hyperpigmentation may occur (darker patches of skin), having the opposite effect. In cases of melasma, your healthcare professional will assess your suitability as this condition is often controlled by the hormones.

The results you can expect may depend on your individual skin type and tone, as well as the conditions you present with. We generally find that to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots, a course of between 2 and 3 sessions will achieve the outcome you desire. If you are wanting to reduce unwanted hair, you may need more.

The treated spots may look darker for a few days before they begin to disappear. Redness and swelling may also occur at the treatment site. These effects are to be expected and will usually subside within a few days. In less common cases, a person may experience blistering, bruising, infection and discolouration of the skin. Your healthcare professional can offer advice in these circumstances. IPL photofacial can not be performed if you have a tan and 4 weeks after sun exposure will need to have passed before the procedure can take place. A high SPF will need to be applied to the skin after treatment.

This treatment does not usually require the patient to allow for any downtime. Normal activities can be resumed almost straight away, although the treated area will feel sensitive for a short while.

Your healthcare professional will be able to advise if IPL is compatible with other treatments. However, due to the skin’s sensitivity it may be recommended that you stay away from sunbeds, chemical peeling, waxing and injectables. Your expert therapist will also explain which medications to avoid also.
